You can narrate an audiobook with AI for $0, or for about $99 for an 8-hour book with ElevenLabs, but where you can sell it matters more than the voice. ACX, the route to Audible for independent authors, prohibits “unauthorized use of text-to-speech, AI, or automated recordings.” Spotify, Google Play Books and Kobo accept declared AI narration, and Google Play, Amazon’s Virtual Voice beta and a built-in Spotify tool narrate for free. All sources were checked October 12, 2026.

This guide covers the stores first, then the free options, the audio specs each store requires, the cost of narrating with ElevenLabs or Murf, and the steps. Which Stores Accept AI-Narrated Audiobooks?

Store or distributorAI narration you produceConditions
ACX / AudibleNoOnly AI authorized by Amazon, such as Virtual Voice; Audible says it is “working to accept third-party TTS content,” with no date
Spotify for AuthorsYesCheck “This audiobook uses digital voice narration”; Spotify says it does not pass these titles to partner stores
Google Play BooksYesDeclare a “synthesized voice” narrator, or use Google’s free auto-narration
Kobo Writing LifeYesNarrator field set to “Synthesised voice”; 45% royalty on sales priced $2.99 or more, 32% on subscription downloads
StorytelYes, declaredNarrator labeled like “John Smith (AI voice)”; independent authors submit an evaluation request
Apple BooksOnly Apple’s own digital narrationEnglish only, free, through partner aggregators such as Draft2Digital; Apple does not say whether it takes AI files from distributors
Voices by INaudio (formerly Findaway Voices)LimitedOnly unmodified packages from Google Play Books, ElevenLabs or Spoken Press, delivered to stores that accept them (not named)

Sources, checked Oct. 12, 2026: ACX submission requirements; Spotify on digital voice narration and other platforms; Google’s metadata guide, which asks whether a book is read by “a human narrator or synthesized voice”; Kobo on AI narration and its audiobook FAQ; Storytel on AI-generated content and getting content on Storytel; Apple’s digital narration and getting started pages; INaudio.

What this means: if Audible is your main market, an ElevenLabs or Murf file cannot go through ACX today. Plan around Spotify, Google Play and Kobo, or around Amazon’s own Virtual Voice.

Can You Narrate an Audiobook With AI for Free?

Yes, through four programs, each with its own limits:

  • Google Play Books auto-narration. Free “for a limited time” for English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish ebooks in EPUB (eligibility; another Google page leaves out Italian). You can download and sell the audiobook elsewhere, as long as it stays on sale on Google Play at a price no higher than elsewhere (program rules).
  • Amazon KDP Virtual Voice. An invite-only beta, free “at this time” (KDP help). Audiobooks sell only in the US marketplace (Audible, Amazon.com, Alexa, Amazon Music Unlimited), priced from $3.99 to $14.99 with a 40% royalty during the beta; if the ebook is in KDP Select, the audiobook must stay exclusive to Audible during enrollment (pricing and distribution).
  • Spotify’s built-in creation tool (ElevenLabs voices). Since September 9, 2026, it is open to self-published US authors for English-language books inside Spotify for Authors: free, up to 5 books per account, labeled “Narrated by Digital Voice” (announcement, help article). Spotify contradicts itself on distribution: the announcement’s FAQ says wider distribution is available through its Voices by INaudio integration, while its help center says AI-narrated titles are not shared with partner stores.
  • ElevenReader Publishing. ElevenLabs’ reading app lets you upload a manuscript (EPUB, DOCX or PDF) and have it voiced in the app, free and without exclusivity. Listeners pick the voice, and you cannot upload your own audio. ElevenLabs is inconsistent here too: its announcement (updated September 28, 2026) says “English only books” and pays $1.10 per listener who passes 11 minutes, for US residents; its help center describes 60% of net revenue on direct sales and $0.20 per hour listened by Ultra subscribers, capped at $2.50.

Apple’s digital narration is also free, but limited to English books sent through its partner aggregators, with a mandatory line saying the book is “narrated by a digital voice based on a human narrator.”

The free options trade control for cost: you choose from each program’s voices, and the audiobook stays tied to that program’s rules. A paid tool gives you files you can send to several stores.

What Audio Quality Does Each Store Require?

This is where the plan you pick matters. Requirements checked Oct. 12, 2026:

StoreMinimum audio
Spotify for AuthorsMP3 at 192 kbps or higher, WAV at 44.1 kHz 16-bit, or FLAC; same mono or stereo setting for every file (Spotify)
Google Play BooksMP3 at 128 kbps or more in mono, 256 kbps in stereo; FLAC or WAV at 44.1 kHz 16-bit; 5 minutes to 100 hours (Google)
KoboNo fixed bitrate; Kobo says most audio is “compressed to 64kbps upon ingestion,” so higher fidelity “is not necessary” (Kobo)
ACX (for reference)192 kbps or higher constant-bitrate MP3 at 44.1 kHz, loudness between −23 and −18 dB RMS, peaks below −3 dB, noise floor below −60 dB RMS, 1 to 5 seconds of room tone at each end, one chapter per file, 120 minutes maximum (ACX)

ElevenLabs Studio exports 128 kbps MP3 on Free, Starter and Creator, and 192 kbps MP3 or 44.1 kHz WAV from Pro up (Studio docs). A Creator export therefore meets Google’s mono minimum and Kobo’s, but not Spotify’s. ElevenLabs’ pricing table lists “128 & 192 kbps” for Creator, while its plan cards limit Creator’s 192 kbps to the API. ACX’s loudness and room-tone rules are a sound target for any store; ElevenLabs does not document the target of its volume normalization, so measure your files in an audio editor before uploading.

What Does AI Narration Cost for a Whole Book?

ACX estimates that “most performers narrate about 9,300 words per hour” (ACX), so a 75,000-word novel runs about 8 hours and a 93,000-word book about 10 hours. Our calculation assumes:

  1. 5.8 characters per word, spaces included (measured on the English text of Around the World in 80 Days);
  2. 1 ElevenLabs credit per character, the app rate for Multilingual v2 according to the pricing FAQ and for v3 according to its help center;
  3. 20% more generation to redo passages you reject (an assumption; Studio also gives two free regenerations of unchanged text, per its help center).

That gives 522,000 credits for 8 hours and 647,280 for 10 hours. Prices are before tax, from the ElevenLabs and Murf pricing pages checked Oct. 12, 2026, excluding promotions:

Option8-hour book10-hour bookAccepted by Spotify?
Google Play, KDP Virtual Voice, Spotify tool, ElevenReader$0$0Program rules above
ElevenLabs Pro ($99/month, 600,000 credits), one month$99about $107Yes (192 kbps)
ElevenLabs Creator ($22/month, 121,000 credits), one month plus top-upsabout $94about $117No (128 kbps)
Murf Creator ($29/month, 2 hours of generation)$145 over 5 months$174 over 6 monthsCheck the export bitrate
Murf Creator annual ($228/year, 24 hours)$228$228Check the export bitrate

Extra ElevenLabs credits now come as prepaid Pay As You Go top-ups, available on every self-serve plan from $5 and capped at $100 a month on Free, Starter and Creator and $200 on Pro without two-factor authentication (ElevenLabs docs); the older usage-based billing is closed to new subscriptions (help center). The pricing table lists extra minutes at about $0.20 on Starter, $0.18 on Creator and $0.17 on Pro. We treat those as the price of 1,000 credits, since the table equates 121,000 credits with about 121 minutes. For Murf, generation time is the finished length plus 20%, so under that assumption the annual plan covers about 20 finished hours a year. These are calculations from published prices, not quotes.

The practical choice: for a single book, one month of ElevenLabs Pro costs about the same as Creator with top-ups, exports at a bitrate Spotify accepts, and leaves room for a second pass. Creator only makes sense if you publish on Google Play and Kobo alone.

How to Narrate an Audiobook With ElevenLabs Studio

ElevenLabs Studio is the long-form editor; its audiobook documentation presents Multilingual v2 as the “default for most audiobook use cases.”

  1. Confirm you hold the audio rights. Google, Apple, Amazon and ACX all require them. If a publisher released your book, check your contract.
  2. Pick your stores first, using the tables above: Spotify needs 192 kbps, which means Pro.
  3. Import the manuscript into Studio (EPUB, PDF, DOCX, TXT or HTML). Studio detects chapters; a project holds up to 500 chapters, 400 paragraphs per chapter and 5,000 characters per paragraph (Studio docs).
  4. Choose the voice and model, then generate one chapter and listen to all of it before converting the whole book. Check names, numbers and dialogue.
  5. Convert the book and review every chapter. Regenerate mispronounced names or wrong emphasis; unchanged text gets two free regenerations.
  6. Export. Studio exports MP3 or WAV, as one file or a ZIP with one file per chapter, with optional volume normalization and metadata (title, author, ISBN).
  7. Publish. Studio can export directly for Spotify for Authors (MP3, with the “narrated by a digital voice” disclosure) and as an LPF package for Voices by INaudio. For Google Play Books and Kobo, upload the files and declare the synthesized narrator.

Narrating With Murf Instead

Murf sells generation time rather than characters: 2 hours a month on Creator, 8 hours on Business. Editing text uses generation time again, while changing the voice, speed or pronunciation of unchanged text is free (pricing FAQ). All paid plans include commercial rights (Murf help); voice cloning is an Enterprise add-on.

Murf exports MP3, WAV or FLAC at 8, 24 or 48 kHz (export help). It lists no 44.1 kHz option and no MP3 bitrate, so check the exported bitrate against Spotify’s 192 kbps minimum and resample for stores that require 44.1 kHz.

Common Mistakes

  • Uploading AI narration to ACX. It breaks ACX’s rules; use Virtual Voice if you want Amazon distribution.
  • Exporting 128 kbps for Spotify. Spotify requires 192 kbps MP3 or 44.1 kHz WAV; ElevenLabs Creator exports 128 kbps from Studio.
  • Expecting AI-narrated titles to spread everywhere. Spotify keeps them on Spotify according to its help center, and Virtual Voice sells only in the US.
  • Skipping the disclosure. Spotify, Google, Kobo, Storytel and Apple all require the AI narrator to be declared; Storytel says it can remove undeclared AI content without notice.
  • Cloning a narrator’s voice without permission. Use a stock voice or your own voice.

FAQ

Does Audible accept AI-narrated audiobooks?

Not from independent authors’ own files. ACX prohibits unauthorized AI narration; the only AI route to Audible is Amazon’s invite-only Virtual Voice beta, sold in the US marketplace. Audible also narrates with AI for selected partner publishers, which is not open to independent authors.

How much does it cost to narrate an audiobook with AI?

From $0 with Google Play, Virtual Voice, Spotify’s tool or ElevenReader, to about $99 for an 8-hour book with one month of ElevenLabs Pro and $145 with Murf’s monthly Creator plan, by our calculation.

Can I sell an AI-narrated audiobook on Spotify and Kobo at the same time?

Yes. Neither requires exclusivity for files you produce, and both accept declared AI narration. Export at 192 kbps or higher so the same files work on Spotify.

Which ElevenLabs plan do I need for an audiobook?

Pro, if you want Spotify: it is the first plan that exports 192 kbps MP3 or 44.1 kHz WAV from Studio. Creator with top-ups works for Google Play and Kobo. See the ElevenLabs profile for every plan, the Murf profile for its alternative, the ElevenLabs alternatives for other voices, and the free AI voice generators for short tests.
